Daido Moriyama was a member of the Provoke movement and a pioneer of Japanese street photography. His crude, sensual, and troubled photographs documented the low life of Tokyo in the 1960s and 1970s. He also created a striking body of work featuring close-up shots of legs in fine hosiery, which spoke of the Americanisation of post-war Japan and the increasing eroticism of photographic advertising. Combined with his Lips series, his images invite spectators to observe them with a fragmented scrutiny and play the game of associations to distinguish desire.
